Dream Girl by Laura Lippman is a highly recommended psychological thriller。Gerry Andersen, 61, is a successful novelist who relocated from NYC to an upscale apartment in Baltimore so he could care for his aging mother。 She died soon after he moved in and Gerry was at loose ends when he had an accident that left him confined to a hospital bed in his apartment。 Now he is cared for during the day by his assistant, Victoria, and at night by a nurse, Aileen。 On a regimen of painkillers and physical t Dream Girl by Laura Lippman is a highly recommended psychological thriller。Gerry Andersen, 61, is a successful novelist who relocated from NYC to an upscale apartment in Baltimore so he could care for his aging mother。 She died soon after he moved in and Gerry was at loose ends when he had an accident that left him confined to a hospital bed in his apartment。 Now he is cared for during the day by his assistant, Victoria, and at night by a nurse, Aileen。 On a regimen of painkillers and physical therapy to build upper body strength so he can use a wheelchair in the future, Gerry's mind wanders back among his various life experiences。 When he begins receiving phone calls from a woman who claims she is Aubrey, the main character in his phenomenal best seller, Dream Girl, Gerry knows there is no Aubrey。 What does the mysterious caller want and why doesn't the number of the caller show up? Could Gerry be hallucinating?Chapters alternate between Gerry's current situation and various incidents that happened in his past。 The past recollections skip around widely from his childhood to a few years before his accident。 He recalls his childhood, three marriages, last girl friend, affairs, book tours, and teaching jobs, in no particular order。 Gerry is, naturally, the star of his recollections, but it becomes increasingly clear that Gerry is a bit of a cad and clueless over his less than stellar actions。 Clearly, Gerry is an unreliable narrator。 He starts out as generally agreeable and quickly loses his charm as his hazy memories jump from one memory to another。 To Lippman's credit, the novel delves deep into the mind of this writer and his version of his experiences。 In the end, everything merges into a picture of the writer and his life。With such a limited cast and a house bound main character we really only have Gerry's thoughts available to help us decipher what is really going on in the story line。 After a certain event, the novel takes an ominous turn and becomes akin to a horror novel, although I would still place it firmly in the realm of psychological suspense。 The plot device of having Gerry housebound, helpless, drugged, and dependent on others for his care merges smoothly with Gerry's concern that he may be hallucinating or losing his mind。 The pace is slow, but Lippman does a great job of including little tidbits of cultural, literary, and movie references。 (I will admit being hopeful when Tess Monaghan made an appearance in the plot, but it is just a brief visit。)Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of William Morrow。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2021/0。。。 。。。more

First of all, many thanks to NetGalley for trusting me with an ARC of this book and giving me the chance of reading it first and commenting it, the following is an honest review spoiler free。I would like to start saying that this is the first book I have read of the author, but after reading this one I am planning to read more, she has a very unique writing style, and I think this is a hard book to write given the narrator conditions and she excels at it。 It's a very quick read, perfect for the First of all, many thanks to NetGalley for trusting me with an ARC of this book and giving me the chance of reading it first and commenting it, the following is an honest review spoiler free。I would like to start saying that this is the first book I have read of the author, but after reading this one I am planning to read more, she has a very unique writing style, and I think this is a hard book to write given the narrator conditions and she excels at it。 It's a very quick read, perfect for the upcoming summer that I'm sure many will enjoy。It has an intriguing premise, a writer gets mysterius calls from one of his characters, so there is this point of mystery in the novel, because you don't know if it is someone impersonatting "Dream Girl" protagonists of his best selling book or if he is losing his mind, so you get in a journey to find this。If you are a beginner on reading in English this is a good book to start with, as it is very clear doesn't use complicate terms, and easy to follow。Thanks again to NetGalley 。。。more

This book surprised me, in a really good way。 I hovered between giving it just 3 stars 80% through, but that changed to 4。5 stars after that ending。 I really enjoy it when books turn out better than expected。The book is also so meta but at the same time feels like a tribute to the "author vs caretaker" trope。 There's also a bit of back and forth between timelines, with no particular trajectory which makes it seem as if the author has gone loopy with his memories, but it works in this case so rea This book surprised me, in a really good way。 I hovered between giving it just 3 stars 80% through, but that changed to 4。5 stars after that ending。 I really enjoy it when books turn out better than expected。The book is also so meta but at the same time feels like a tribute to the "author vs caretaker" trope。 There's also a bit of back and forth between timelines, with no particular trajectory which makes it seem as if the author has gone loopy with his memories, but it works in this case so readers can know a bit more about the protagonist, Gerry。 The writing is also pretty good, and I enjoyed it! Gerry Andersen is a popular author。 His bestseller, Dream Girl, is about Aubrey, a twenty-something woman and her 72-hour affair with an older man。 Legions of fans love to speculate as to who was the inspiration for its main character。 Gerry insists the story is purely fiction。 The 61-year-old author has had a lot of experience with women。 Three ex-wives, almost a fourth and a string of liaisons。 He believes he’s a good guy who has treated the women in his life well。 He's a man with some serious Gerry Andersen is a popular author。 His bestseller, Dream Girl, is about Aubrey, a twenty-something woman and her 72-hour affair with an older man。 Legions of fans love to speculate as to who was the inspiration for its main character。 Gerry insists the story is purely fiction。 The 61-year-old author has had a lot of experience with women。 Three ex-wives, almost a fourth and a string of liaisons。 He believes he’s a good guy who has treated the women in his life well。 He's a man with some serious lack of self awareness! Gerry has relocated from New York City to Baltimore to care for his mother。 When she dies after suffering from dementia, Gerry has a freak accident and is bedridden。 Personal assistant Victoria and night nurse Aileen provide round-the-clock help。 A letter arrives (and mysteriously disappears) from someone named Aubrey。 Then, a woman who says she is the real Aubrey keeps calling Gerry。 A Twitter account in her name appears with some very personal information about Gerry。 Is he hallucinating? If not, who is behind this?Laura Lippman has created a suspenseful thriller with shades of Stephen King’s Misery。 The story, told in very short chapters, alternates from the present and various periods in Gerry’s past。 Mostly while heavily medicated, Gerry recalls his relationship with his mother, his unfaithful father, his few close friends, the history of his marriages and his days as a visiting college professor as well as a touring author。 There’s a lot going on and a lot to keep you guessing as the pieces of this puzzle (for the most part) start to come together with great “antici……pation,” as the book quotes Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show。 (There are other smile-worthy references to movies and books。)I enjoyed Dream Girl。 Even though Gerry was too much of a clueless, misogynist jerk to care much about, I couldn’t put the book down。 I appreciated the humorous and satirical aspects and without giving anything away, it was ultimately satisfying。 Many thanks to Williams Morrow / HarperCollins and Edelweiss+ for the opportunity to read this well-done thriller in advance of its June 22, 2021 publication。Review to be posted on MicheleReader。com closer to publication。 。。。more

Aubrey is the character from his book, Dream Girl。 She is purely fictional, but, yet, she claims that he has treated her poorly。 There are no records that these calls exist。 Is he taking too much Ambien? We are treated to a cameo by my favorite Lippman character, Tess Monaghan。Gerry is an unlikeable character。 He is sexist, selfish, full of himself, and cannot believe that anyone would want to hurt him。 The book jumps timelines as Gerry looks back。 They took a little getting used。Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this novel。 The review is my own。 。。。more

What!?" feeling over and over。 There were several times when I didn't know what hit me, those twists snuck right up on me and took the story in a whole different direction。 And of course I love the whole book within a book setup as well! Thanks to the publishing company for this arc。 This was an interesting read。 I don’t read classics but I imagine this was written as one would be。 I had to get used to the writing style at first but once I did I quite enjoyed it。 This had humor, mystery and intrigue。 The Who dun-it reveal wasn’t too much of a wow factor but it was good。 How everything wrapped up and ended did feel a little rushed but was surprising。

I've been mentally writing this review before I even finished the book。 Gerry Anderson is a celebrated writer。 Thrice married and thrice divorced, he's made his career with a hit novel "Dream Girl" - a book - based in no one。 He's been a visiting professor, a celebrated writer and now, now he's a man who can't walk because of an injury in his Baltimore apartment。 He slips in and out of awareness - reliving his past and dealing with his present situation with an assistant and a nighttime nurse。 T I've been mentally writing this review before I even finished the book。 Gerry Anderson is a celebrated writer。 Thrice married and thrice divorced, he's made his career with a hit novel "Dream Girl" - a book - based in no one。 He's been a visiting professor, a celebrated writer and now, now he's a man who can't walk because of an injury in his Baltimore apartment。 He slips in and out of awareness - reliving his past and dealing with his present situation with an assistant and a nighttime nurse。 Then he wakes up one morning。。。。and there's a body。 I really enjoyed Laura Lippman's previous work and was excited to read this one as well。 Lippman wrote a confusing and thriller novel with very "inside baseball" literature references (Sheila Heti!!) and I love every single word。 I think that some readers may find this a little hard to get into - I know that I did - but the story that blossoms out of these pages is wild and it's 100% worth the ride。 Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review。 。。。more

When writer Gerry Andersen has an accident at home and needs a nurse to care for him strange things start to happen; is it the medication that he's taking or is someone out for revenge? The story gripped me from the beginning; Gerry wasn't a likeable character the flashbacks between the past and present made him more 'real' and when the novel took a misery-esque turn I couldn't put it down until I found out how things were going to end。 Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the n When writer Gerry Andersen has an accident at home and needs a nurse to care for him strange things start to happen; is it the medication that he's taking or is someone out for revenge? The story gripped me from the beginning; Gerry wasn't a likeable character the flashbacks between the past and present made him more 'real' and when the novel took a misery-esque turn I couldn't put it down until I found out how things were going to end。 Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review 。。。more

I love Lippman's Tess Monaghan mysteries and have also enjoyed several of her standalone novels。 Instead of the usual mystery that Lippman is known for, Dream Girl is a thriller in part inspired by Stephen King's Misery。 The main character, author Gerry Andersen, is having a hard time writing and is now recovering from a serious injury in his Baltimore penthouse。 He fell down a staircase in his home after receiving a letter with the return address of the lead character in his fictional novel, Dr I love Lippman's Tess Monaghan mysteries and have also enjoyed several of her standalone novels。 Instead of the usual mystery that Lippman is known for, Dream Girl is a thriller in part inspired by Stephen King's Misery。 The main character, author Gerry Andersen, is having a hard time writing and is now recovering from a serious injury in his Baltimore penthouse。 He fell down a staircase in his home after receiving a letter with the return address of the lead character in his fictional novel, Dream Girl。 He then has his assistant with him during the day and a nurse during the evening。 Things really start getting weird and Gerry doesn’t know if he’s dreaming, hallucinating, or starting to have memory issues like his deceased mother had。The book takes place over multiple timelines with memories from the past being mixed in with the present。 Gerry is a sympathetic character at first, but as the story progresses, it seems clear that Gerry’s take on past events seem to be far from the truth。 There really isn’t anyone to root for in the story except for the very end。 However, Lippman is a terrific storyteller and the book kept my interest from the beginning to end。 Part of what kept me entertained is all the humor included。 I also like that you really get a feel for the Baltimore setting as described in the story。 The book isn’t as gruesome as MIsery, but you can see how that book inspired Dream Girl, which takes that concept in a different direction。Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for this ebook。 An advance copy was provided to me at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased。 。。。more

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy to read and review。 I thought it was rather slow-paced。 Something happens finally around 50% in and it’s rather obvious the culprit but you don’t really find out until about 90% in。 The flashbacks were interesting and, with the slight shock at the end, make you curious if they were real。 I wish I hadn’t been able to predict as much as I did。

this was a quick DNF。 The writing didn't seem anything like Lippman's previous work。 this was a quick DNF。 The writing didn't seem anything like Lippman's previous work。 。。。more
